new on August
30, 1988, this 962 was entered in the World
Sports Car Championship (WSCC) and raced extensively (Group C)
by a privateer team including the 24 Hours
LeMans.

During 1989, the
decision was taken to rebody the car with carbon replacement.
This was not due to any accident damage but because there was
a school of thought at the time that the then aging designs of
the original body would benefit from the use of a stiffer
material. The project was initiated by Team Schuppan and fully
endorsed by Porsche AG. All drawings were supplied directly by
the factory who took an active interest in the
project.

The completed body was
sent to Porsche and they sanctioned the work and agreed to
allow the new body to retain chassis No.138. It should be
noted that the body, unlike various “home-made” special from
Kremer, Almeras, etc., share the exact dimension and fitting
of the original design.
nla
The result was, as has
been hoped, a vastly stiffer body and Vern Schuppan, who then
campaigned the car, declared the most responsive chassis he
had driven – even curing the terminal low-speed under steer
inherent in all 962’.
nla
The car therefore boasts
the only officially – certified carbon fiber body ever
constructed and one that offers greater strength and safety
over the somewhat frail aluminum alternatives.

This
car features a Bosch Motronic 1.7 System, the water/water
engine races at 650/700 BHP.
